چکیده

Block Truncation Coding (BTC) for image compression [ 11 is a simple and effective coding technique which processes non-overlapping sub-image blocks of an image independently. In its original form, BTC is designed in such a manner that the first and second moments of the original blocks are preserved in the reconstructed blocks. BTC has the advantage of being easy to implement compared with other block-based compression methods such as transform coding [2] and vector quantization [31, and additionally it can code images with a relatively high compression ratio. In recent years, several attempts have been made to improve the coding efficiency of the basic BTC technique, with compression ratios in the range of 5:l to 6:l being reported [4,5,61.
